Solution to Error: Backup error: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x800700002)

Backup error: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x800700002)

Windows' Backup utility has stopped working (after working fine for years) a few months ago, and each time it attempts to run gives this error message:

"The system cannot find the file specified.  (0x800700002).

I have noticed in the event viewer that this seems to correlate with another error about the Volume Shadow Copy Service, but this error never appears onscreen, just in the event viewer.  (Text of which is attached below).
There is a similar thread elsewhere in the knowledgebase, so have tried some of these steps already, including doing a checkdisk on c:\, as well as an integrity check on the system files as suggested in another thread.

Any thoughts?

Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter 00000001 (hexadecimal)
or 1 (decimal)

Under LogFileSetting, create a new String value called LogPathName.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter C:\asr.log.

Next, reproduce the error.
You should have a file called asr.log under c:\.
