Creating captions that include chapter numbers from custom styles?

I am trying to format a document such that it contains two sets of multilevel lists (Chapters 1, 2, etc.
and then later Appendix A, B, etc.).
I have managed to get it to work by using a section break between the areas I want to have lists in, and then
I created custom styles for Header 1, 2, and 3 for each section, naming the new styles Ch Head 1, 2, and 3, and Ap Head 1, 2, and 3.

Now I would like to insert figures with captions that include the chapter number, so some figures would use Ch Head 1 and some would use Ap Head 1, depending on which section they are in.
Unfortunately I can only select to use the default styles Header 1, 2,
etc.
when selecting the chapter portion of the caption.
Is there a way around this?
